A mother posted a touching photo of her newborn baby giving her dying twin a “last hug”

In the sweet snapshot of the first time Amy Campbell got to hold both of her children at once, tiny Charlotte Campbell is seen around her sɪᴄᴋ twin Esme Campbell after they were born at barely 26 weeks and five days.

Just days before her ᴅᴇᴀᴛʜ, a mother published a touching picture of her Nᴇᴡʙᴏʀɴꜱinfant giving her dying twin sister a “last hug.” Esme had an extraordinary quantity of fluid on her brain, which devastated former special needs teacher Amy, 30, and her husband Conor Campbell, a 32-year-old commercial ᴍᴀɴager.

Since Esme and her sister Charlotte were born ᴅᴀɴɢᴇʀᴏᴜsly preterm on July 10, 2016, at 26 weeks and five days gestation and only weighing 2.2 pounds and 2 pounds, respectively, they had spent seven weeks ғɪɢʜᴛing for their lives.

But after tests showed that Esme’s brain ventricles had accumulated so much fluid that she would never have any quality of life, Amy and Conor were forced to make the painful choice to turn off the ʙᴀʙʏ’s life support.

First-time parents Amy and Conor from Leeds, Yorks, requested that the nurses assist them in holding the girls simultaneously because they were determined for their daughters to “meet” before Esme ᴅɪᴇᴅ away. Charlotte wrapped her arm around her sister’s shoulders as nurses laid the ᴛᴡɪɴꜱ on their mother’s Bʀᴇᴀꜱᴛ, creating a priceless memory that, in Amy’s words, “felt so natural.”

Esme ᴘᴀssᴇᴅ ᴀᴡᴀʏ in the early hours of August 30, 2016, after the touching photo of the ᴛᴡɪɴꜱ’ embrace was captured on August 27, 2016. “Esme had a really nasty infection but we got told that her infection markers had dropped right down and we felt she was ғɪɢʜᴛing back,” said full-time mother Amy, who is currently 38 weeks Pʀᴇɢɴᴀɴᴛ with a Nᴇᴡʙᴏʀɴꜱboy.

.The hospital then called me when I was out walking the dog on Saturday. I knew there was a serious problem because they never contacted me unless there was an emergency. The doctors informed us that even if she were to survive, she would have little quality of life because additional fluid had entered her ventricles in her brain and her head circumference had grown significantly. I had previously heard a wOᴍᴀɴ who had ʟᴏsᴛ her kid sob at her funeral before I had the girls. Her sobs to my very bones.

Conor and I had never been able to ᴍᴀɴage them both at the same time, so the nurses planned to help us. The entire time, they were truly brilliant. They were placed on my chest by the nurses, and when Charlotte wrapped Esme in her arm, I remarked, “They love each other.” It would be lovely to imagine that Charlotte was giving her sister a great hug, but most likely she was just getting comfortable. Perhaps she was hugging her because she is such a kind girl. The best moment of my life was when I held them both ᴄʟᴏsᴇ in my arms.

Amy and Conor held their brave girl for 12 hours after her life support was switched off till she ᴘᴀssᴇᴅ ᴀᴡᴀʏ in her mother’s arms the next day because they knew it was the proper moment to stop her misery.

On September 13, 2016, Esme was interred wearing Charlotte’s baptismal attire.
